Technical SEO Audit Checklist for Lead-Generation Websites

Audit crawling, indexing, canonicals, structured data, performance and internal links without confusing technical SEO with guaranteed rankings.

A technical SEO audit checks whether search engines can discover, render, understand and index the correct pages efficiently. It also checks technical signals such as canonicals, redirects, structured data, mobile behaviour and performance. It cannot guarantee ranking: relevance, usefulness, competition, reputation and changing search systems also matter.

Google describes crawling, indexing and serving as distinct stages in How Google Search works. Structure the audit around those stages and prioritise problems that affect valuable pages, not the sheer number of tool warnings.

Establish the baseline

Record the business’s priority services, locations, audiences and conversion journeys. Export current organic landing-page performance, queries, indexed pages, sitemaps and known manual actions from appropriate analytics and search tools.

Crawl the public site with and without JavaScript where relevant. Compare discovered URLs with the content management system, XML sitemap and search index reports. Identify templates, parameters, duplicates and orphan pages.

Preserve the baseline so changes can be evaluated. SEO work without before-and-after evidence easily becomes opinion.

Check crawling access

Review robots.txt for accidental blocks and confirm it returns successfully. Remember that blocking crawling is not a reliable way to remove an already known URL from search; use the correct indexing controls.

Ensure important pages are reachable through ordinary HTML links. Navigation and contextual internal links should not depend solely on scripts, forms or site search. Keep the crawl path from the homepage reasonably short for important content.

Inspect server logs or crawl statistics when available. Look for repeated crawling of parameters, faceted combinations, broken URLs and redirects that waste attention.

Validate indexability

For each indexable page check the HTTP status, robots directives, canonical URL and rendered content. Important pages should normally return 200, remain indexable and declare a self-referencing canonical unless consolidation is deliberate.

Remove contradictory signals. A URL should not be in the XML sitemap while redirecting, returning an error, declaring another canonical or carrying noindex.

Use noindex for pages that may be crawled but should not appear in search. Protect private content with authentication, not indexing directives.

Audit status codes and redirects

Repair broken internal links. Redirect retired URLs to the closest genuine replacement, not indiscriminately to the homepage. Avoid chains and loops; link directly to the final URL.

Distinguish temporary and permanent changes. During a redesign or domain move, follow a mapping and validation process such as the website migration SEO checklist.

Custom 404 pages should return the actual 404 status and help users continue. Soft 404s—thin or missing pages returning 200—create confusing signals.

Review canonicalisation and URL consistency

Choose one HTTPS host and consistent trailing-slash, case and parameter behaviour. Redirect variations and generate internal links, sitemap entries, canonicals and structured-data URLs in the preferred form.

Canonical tags are hints, strengthened by consistent redirects, links and sitemap inclusion. Do not canonicalise genuinely distinct pages merely because their layouts are similar.

Inspect rendering and JavaScript

Compare source HTML with rendered HTML for titles, headings, body content, links, canonicals and structured data. Server rendering or static generation can make important content available immediately; client-side rendering can work but adds failure and resource risks.

Test error states, consent choices and blocked resources. A page that appears correct in a developer’s session may render incomplete content to a crawler or first-time user.

Audit metadata and page intent

Every indexable page needs a descriptive, distinct title and a useful main heading aligned with its actual subject. Meta descriptions should accurately summarise the value; they influence presentation but are not a direct ranking guarantee.

Check for several pages targeting the same intent. Consolidate true duplicates or differentiate their purpose. A landing page vs full website comparison should not compete with a service page offering website delivery.

Validate structured data

Use structured data only when it matches visible page content and the supported type. Validate syntax and required properties. Article pages may use BlogPosting; navigation paths may use BreadcrumbList; organisation details must stay consistent.

Structured data can improve eligibility for search features but does not guarantee display. Monitor enhancement reports and errors after deployment.

Test mobile experience and performance

Confirm responsive content, readable text, usable controls, stable layouts and equivalent primary content on mobile. Avoid intrusive overlays that obscure the task.

Optimise images, fonts, script execution, caching and server response according to measured bottlenecks.

Do not remove useful content merely to chase a score. Prioritise improvements that benefit real user journeys.

Check sitemaps, feeds and discovery

XML sitemaps should include canonical, indexable URLs and update accurately. Split very large sitemaps logically. Submit and monitor them in search tools, but do not expect a sitemap to override poor internal linking or index directives.

For an editorial programme, expose category pages, related articles and an RSS feed. These paths help people and crawlers discover deeper material without relying on a search box.

Connect SEO to measurement

Segment branded and non-branded demand, service topics, regions and conversion outcomes. Rankings alone do not show whether the site reaches the right audience.

Prioritise the findings

Score each issue by affected valuable URLs, business consequence, confidence and implementation effort. Critical blocks, wrong canonicals and broken lead journeys come before harmless title-length warnings.

Assign owner, expected outcome, validation method and rollback. Re-crawl after fixes, inspect live HTML and monitor index coverage and performance over time.
